Feudalism


Location: Medieval Europe between the ninth and fifteenth centuries.

Political Characteristics: Feudalism emerged due to the absence of political power and the necessity of administer effectively large portions of territory (fief or feudum during the Roman Empire)

Social Characteristics: Kings were the most powerful, but they only had ceremonial power. They gave land to the Lords or Barons. These people chose their knights, who protected them, in exchange for lands. The knights also protected the villains or peasants, who had to give services or food when demanded.

Economical characteristics:  Agriculture was the main part of feudalism, because all of it was based on the exchange of lands for different services or things.

Cultural Characteristics: They had a lot festivals and holidays. They could pass time socializing with other people at work or in their free time. Women were supposed to help their husbands in their labors.

Important Characters: The Pope and the Emperor were the most powerful people, the king only had ceremonial power.
