Location: Centered at its capital Constantinople (today Istanbul Turkey).
Political Characteristics: Until 527, it saw a period of extensive Imperial conquests of former Roman territories. Justinian updated the ancient Roman legal code into the Corpus Iuris Civilis.
Social Characteristics: It was a Greek speaking Roman Empire during the Middle Ages.
Economical characteristics: In commerce, Byzantium was one of the most important western terminals of the Silk Route.
Cultural Characteristics: Byzantium played an important role in the transmission of classical knowledge to the Islamic world and to Renaissance Italy. There was controversy and religious division over iconoclasm (worshipping images).
Important Characters: Constantinople was founded by Rome’s first Christian emperor, Constantine.
